Le potenzialità esplorative che le nuove tecnologie permettono ai ricercatori marini non smettono mai di sorprenderci. Grazie alla possibilità di indagare con i ROV (Remoted Operative Vehicle) il fondale a grandi profondità stiamo scoprendo sempre maggiori porzioni della nostra “barriera corallina”.
Da tempo si sapeva che, a grandi profondità lungo le nostre coste, sulle pareti in discesa verso gli abissi erano presenti formazioni coralline: i coralli bianchi profondi del Mediterraneo.
I pescherecci, spesso, raccoglievano grandi ammassi morti di questi madreporari. In passato si supponeva che oramai ci fossero solo tanatocenosi, un termine scientifico per classificare le comunità di organismi oramai morti, relitti del passato.
E invece, solo una decina di anni fa, l’uso dei veicoli subacquei da ricerca ha permesso di scoprire che i coralli bianchi sono vivi anche nel nostro Mediterraneo.

La barriera corallina mediterranea è profondamente diversa da quella tropicale che tutti conosciamo, la nostra è profonda, inaccessibile per i subacquei ed ancora estremamente misteriosa.
Ma l’esplorazione del pianeta blu continua ed è notizia recente della scoperta di una formazione di coralli bianchi vivi appartenenti alla specie Madrepora oculata a 560 metri di profondità nei fondali davanti Punta Mesco alle Cinque Terre (La Spezia): questo è il risultato della recente campagna oceanografica condotta dai ricercatori del Centro Ricerche Ambiente Marino dell’ENEA di S. Teresa (La Spezia) e dalla Marina Militare.
Durante questa fase le prospezioni geofisiche sono state svolte a bordo delle navi idrografiche “Magnaghi” e “Aretusa” e le indagini sono state dirette con ROV “Pluto Gigas” in dotazione al cacciamine “Milazzo” del Comando delle Forze di Contromisure Mine (COMFORDRAG) della Marina Militare che ha permesso di identificare l’area dove sono stati rinvenuti i banchi di corallo bianco. I coralli bianchi possono essere paragonati a delle vere e proprie oasi nel deserto, in quanto offrono riparo e alimentazione a molte specie. Si è infatti stimato che i reef di coralli bianchi ospitano una diversità biologica tre volte più elevata di quella dell’ambiente circostante.
Fino ad ora erano stati trovati solo nello Ionio, nel Canale di Sicilia e nell’Adriatico meridionale.
Nel 2007, durante la campagna oceanografica ARCO (AdRiatic COrals), condotta dall’Istituto di scienze marine del Consiglio nazionale delle ricerche di Bologna a bordo della nave oceanografica Urania, il gruppo di ricerca coordinato da Marco Taviani (ISMAR-CNR) aveva scoperto estese scogliere coralline a coralli bianchi morti (Lophelia e Madrepora) situate a meno di 200 metri di profondità al largo di Pescara, nella zona della depressione medio-adriatica, scomparsi probabilmente a seguito dell’innalzamento della temperatura in epoca post-glaciale.
Più recentemente, un altro grande risultato scientifico è stato raggiunto dalla prima missione della campagna oceanografica ‘ALTRO’, a bordo della nave oceanografica Urania del Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR), nell’ambito del progetto europeo CoCoNet (Towards COast to COast NETworks of marine protected areas coupled with sea-based wind energy potential), che ha svelato l’esistenza di ambienti sommersi e formazioni calcaree di grande rilevanza scientifica mai osservati prima in nel nostro mare: i camini di pietra del mediterraneo.

La scoperta dei coralli bianchi vivi nel Mar ligure orientale di questi ultimi giorni, oltre ad aggiornare la distribuzione dei coralli bianchi nei mari italiani, offre un punto di partenza per ulteriori indagini nell’area, dove sono state segnalate altre formazioni madreporiche, e pone le basi per l’identificazione di appropriate misure di salvaguardia di questi ecosistemi di elevata importanza scientifica ma molto delicati. La Direttiva Europea Habitats (H1170 – “Reefs”) annovera infatti i coralli profondi tra gli habitat vulnerabili e di conseguenza è necessaria la loro individuazione e mappatura.
La ricerca sulla biodiversità profonda del nostro mare deve continuare ad essere sostenuta. Anche semplicemente diffondendo questo tipo di notizie.
